Accessing the internet via wireless devices

Isolating a wireless subnet?

We’re replacing an Apple "snow" AirPort (802.11b) with an AirPort Extreme
(802.11n) and would like to provide Internet access for clients in the
waiting room. Obviously we don’t want them to have access to our computers or
servers.

By what mechanism can a wireless subnet be created such that the users have
Internet access yet cannot (easily) have access to the rest of the private
net that shares the DSL modem that supplies ‘net access to the LAN as a
whole?

Is a router required at the junction of the DSL modem and the 2 AirPort WAPs
that controls access between the 2 branches?

Other means?

Thanks,
Janie

Using router as wireless access point, is this possible?

I have a Linksys WAG354G wireless router situated upstairs that all my
wifi devices use to connect to the internet and each other.

Assume I have just bought a none wifi enabled PC for downstairs,
situated well away from my Linksys. As it happens I have 2 spare
wireless routers kicking around, one of which is a Netgear WG834GT.

My question is, can I connect none wifi PC to the netgear router via
ethernet and then have the netgear act as a wireless access point and
communicate with the linksys upstairs? ie, I don’t want to have an
ethernet cable going from downstairs to upstairs and I don’t want to
buy a wireless adaptor (for this example).

I’ve just tried doing the above, I log into the netgear, turn off DHCP
and assign it an IP within the range of the linksys router. But  what
settings do I put for subnet mask, wireless SSID, security etc? do I
simply match the settings on the Linksys?

Or is what I want to do even possible?

no Net, but good connection and signal

Even though WinXP Wireless connection box says I’m connected when  I open IE
or FireFox browsers I get "page cannot be found". My hardware is a Dell
Inspiron 8600 laptop with a PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 mini PCI card and  Linksys
WRT600N router. All drivers for my laptop have been updated. After spending
an hour with Linksys tech support I am still unable to connect wirelessly,
but my wired cable connection works fine. Any suggestions would be great
because I am really fed up with this $200 WiFi router purchase which for 2
days now has not worked. Below are 2 IPconfig results, wired and wireless.

Need wireless bridge recommendations w/ wpa2

Hi All,

I am trying to connect a computer with an Ethernet port
and no spare PCI slots to a small WPA2 protected wireless
network.

Does anyone have recommendation for a wireless bridge
that supports WPA2?

I had been using USR products, but had to stop using
any of their products do to a hardware design defect
in their eeproms circuits that kept them from saving changes.

I also looked at the Linksys WET54G but no
WPA2 (only wpa1).

I found a ZyXel G-570S but have no experience with
their reliability.

Anyway, I thought it was time to ask for help.

Many thanks,
-T

DLink using bad caps?

Hi,

As I recently posted, one of my main wireless routers (DI-764 802.11a/b)
finally died completetly after six years of use.  The 802.11a radio had died
a few months back, but by then I was only using the router portion of the
DI-764 as I had a WAP (DWL-7100AP 802.11a/gb) attached to it.

I’ve since ordered a wired router to replace the old DI-764 (waiting on it
to arrive from Newegg), but thought I would play around with the old DI-764
and see if I could actually fix the thing.  Upon opening it up, I noticed
that one cap had completely bursted while another one was buldging.  First
trip to a Radio Shack proved fruitless as that particular store (at a mall)
no longer sold components.  The sales clerk didn’t even know what a
capacitor was.  She kept asking me if it was some sort of interconnect!

Anyway, today while lunch at work, I went to a regular Radio Shack and got
new caps.  I then soldered the new caps onto the mainboard and the DI-764,
to me disbelief, was fully operational again!

Once I got home, I decided to look into another D-Link WAP that I have since
it has just started acting a little flakey.  Sure enough, one of the caps
inside it is starting to buldge.  This particular WAP has only been running
for a little over a year.

Ok, I guess I shouldn’t really complain about six years of 24/7 operation,
but should they be crapping out after only a year?  Is D-Link saving a few
pennies by using poor quality caps?

What did I do?

I was trying to set-up Airport Express to work with my iTunes as a
client through my main base station (an Airport Extreme). I can no
longer find the express and the express is flashing amber. Aybody know
how I might get the express to show up again and go green?

I am not having any problems.

What should I do? Both my wireless bridges show 0 BER, I
get 54 MBit connections pretty much all the time, response
time is indistinguishable from wire connect 100BaseTX.

comparing two routers

I’ve been using a ZyXel P-330W for ?: a couple of years or so.
I recently got a freebie Linksys BEFW11S4 that I plan to use in our second
home this Summer.
I tried comparing the specs and didn’t see any difference, but I don’t
understand  the real geeky stuff.
Is there any real difference between these two routers?

WiFi (192.xx) & Wired (10.xx)

I was using my laptop to review my DSL modem stats
by hooking up a small hub on the WAN connection
between the DSL modem and my router.
(disable Wifi & enable Ethernet)
The DSL modem lives at 10.0.0.1,
so I setup my static IP info on the Ethernet connection for that – all works
fine

BUT – I was thinking –
would there be a way to have both the Ethernet @ 10.0.0.xx
and the WiFi @ 192.168.1.xx active at the same time…
Running XP/SP2

If I use the browser…. how would it know which interface to use
for an entered IP address or to be resolved DNS name ?
